The Institute of Population and Labor Economics (IPLE-CASS), Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), was established in l980. Current director is Professor CAI Fang.

The Institute of Population and Labor Economics is divided into four research divisions, two editorial departments, and an administrative office in charge of research coordination, foreign exchange, graduate program, reference section, and personnel management.

Center for Human Resources Research, CASS, was set up based on Institute of Population and Labor Economics. It emphasizes studies on issues of labor migration and labor market integration.

The four research divisions are (l) Labor and Human Capital, (2) Population and Social Development, (3) Quantitative Analysis of Population and (4) International Popu1ation Comparing. Chinese Journal of Population Science, a bimonthly journal, and Almanac of China's Population, a yearly publication are internationally circulated publications by IPLE.

Since IPLE was set up, its researchers have been conducting many research projects, including the followings.

In the Sixth Five-Year Plan Period (l981-l985), four key projects of the National Program of Phi1osophy and Socia1 Sciences were undertaken. "Chinese Population and Employment in 20O0" won the award of the State Scientific Progress in 1988. "China Today: Population" is a volume of the China Today series. The report of The Projection on the Chinese Employment in 2000 won the second prize of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

In the Seventh Five-Year plan period (1986-l990), two key projects of the National Program of Phi1osophy and Social Sciences were undertaken. 0ne is "The Survey on the Chinese Old Population and the Reform on the Social Security System for Old Population", leading to the publication of the China l987 Aged Population Over 60 Years (Old) Sampling Survey Data and 3 Volumes of China's Old Population related to population, economy and society. They contain some advanced research results. The other is The Survey 0n the Chinese Population Migration, in which the China Migration of 74 Cities & Towns Samp1ing Survey Data in l986 and the Chinese Population Migration have been published. In addition, there were some key research projects at the level of Academy or Institute. For example, "Population Issues in the Reform and 0pening"£¬ "The Population of the Coastal Area and the Economic Development", and "Statistics and Study on Chinese Population Data Over Years" and so on.

In the Eighth Five-Year Plan Period (l99l -1995),a key Project named "Fertility Analysis at Micro Level and the Study of Mechanism of Popu1ation Control" of the National Program of Philosophy and Social Sciences have been undertaken in the Institute. At the Academy level, the two key research Projects are "Household Economy and Fertility of China", and "Study on Contemporary Women's Status in China". Both have finished the sampling surveys and data collection in l0 provinces and cities of China. The monographs related two projects have been pub1ished.

In the Ninth Five-Year P1an Period(l996-2000), two key projects named "Popu1ation and Sustainable Development", "Chinese Population of Minority Nationalities" of the National Program of Phi1osophy and Social Sciences and two key projects at the Academy level named "Chinese Popu1ation History", "Migration and Population Mobility" are being undertaken in the Institute.

Since 2001, We undertook some research projects, including the National Program of Phi1osophy and Social Sciences, as "Status of labor input and Human Capital formation in China industrial progress and facing Competition after join in WTO "£¬"Transition of Chinese society and change of family and childbearing"£¬"Studies for higher sex ratio at birth and the choice of the countermeasure"£¬"Sustainable development of underpopulated minority nationalities community in west of China"£¬ "Change of fertility rate and its impact on labor supply and demand and long-term increase of china economy". The key projects at CASS, as£º"Study on the measures and policy for solving a problem of employment in mid-long-term in china","China rural development and raise of income of peasantry : poverty, disparity of income and raise steadily","Evaluating of effects of Chinese population policies and the conversion of the notion ","Study of the impact of aging on the economy and society and the choice of policy","Study on Reemployment and social security in some cities of higher unemployment in China". Other projects as£º"Study of urban poverty and migration of shanty community in China city","Study on the differences and contributing factors for obtained education of china population"£¬etc..

Graduate Program
Department of Demography and Labor Economics is affiliated with The Graduate School of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, training the postgraduates on Demography and Labor Economics with Master degree and Ph.D. degree.

Publications
The Chinese Joura1 of Population Science is edited bimonth1y by the Institute, which publishes high quality articles on demography and labor economics. Since the Publication started, it has been highly praised by the experts in China and abroad. The Almanac of China's Population is a reference book consisting of theoretica1 and policy information on Population. Since publication and distribution in China and abroad started in l985, it has provided the reliable information and materials on population in China. Since 2000, "Green book of population and labor" serial publications have been issued annually.
